She gotten many props from her Korean pop star peers, all of whom seem to exclaim of her virtues and respect her voice. But it’s not been until recently that she’s attracted attention outside of her Korean homeland. The country has been broadcasting Korean TV shows frequently during the last few years, and Lee Hyori’s exposure has been quite substantial during that time. She’s not just a hugely successful pop singer in Korea, but Lee Hyori will be getting an enormous boost of international attention as well, after Calvin Klein recently announced that she’ll be their next model representative for Asia. She will be receiving a quite lucrative sum for such a brief 6 month contract, but the CK brand, well aware of her tremendous influence over Asian teenage fashion, knows that the investment will be well worth the cost. Korean pop singer BoA’s enormous success in Japan, has made it all but impossible for her to spend time promoting, or performing just about anywhere else. This of course, has caused many grumblings back home, with Korean fans complaining that it’s virtually impossible to see her live without incurring the expensive costs of flying back and forth to Japan. After hearing about these issues for so long, BoA decided to take matters into her own hands, and arranged for a special one night only performance earlier last month. After the audience’s not surprising enthusiasm for the show, there was talk of adding a few more, but with her Japanese popularity being what it is, and the responsibilities that come with that, it may not be realistic to expect something like that to materialize anytime soon.
It was recently revealed that one of Korea’s biggest talent agencies, SM Entertainment, is actively seeking US talent, with the intention of exporting those chosen back to Korea. There have already been several auditions in as many as 11 U.S. cities, and still several more being planned. The idea came, after top SM executives concluded that the only way to have American culture conveyed authentically to Korean audiences, is to to recruit directly from the US. After teaching them the language, and Korean cultural nuances, the newly groomed pop stars would have qualities hard to find on their home turf. So far, the project hasn’t had enough time to bear fruit, but with SM’s president Lee Soo-man behind the idea, you can safely bet there will be some quite interesting stars coming out of Korea sometime in the near future.
You may not have heard of Korean singer “Star”, but that won’t be for long, as she is fast becoming one of Asia’s most popular celebrities–thanks to her beautiful rendition of the theme song to Korean series “Full House.” The song has long mirrored the popularity of the show itself, and Star’s fame has grown in direct proportion to that popularity. In China, she’s been getting so much attention, that there are claims of a tour in which all that’s expected of the young singer, is a performance of the “Full House” theme song alone. That may be hearsay of course, but a quick look at this live performance online gives a glimpse into just how popular the song has become.
No, you’re not seeing things, that really is Korean singer Rain’s picture on the side of a 777. Korean Airline’s top execs recently announced that they will be promoting Rain’s current tour, as well as Korean culture in general, throughout several of their hub airports worldwide. Not much is known whether Rain will be the only pop star promoted, but one can only hope he’s not the last. Just imagine–huge crowds being stirred to a frenzy, upon seeing a gigantic, hot pink, Lee Hyori plane getting ready for take-off..
Korean artist Younha, has recently secured an interesting new job for herself, after proving to be quite skilled in conveying Japanese sensibilities to her fellow Koreans. She’s been chosen by Japan’s National Tourist Organization, to promote Japanese tourism throughout her homeland of Korea, and the organization hopes to build more public interest in visiting Japan. The trend lately within Asian tourism, has seen Japanese destinations losing out to more exotic Asian locals, and the JNTO hopes to remind Koreans, and other Asian nationals, just how interesting a trip to Japan can be.
A study published by Japanese music ranking company Oricon, has made a few quite interesting discoveries. Oricon wanted to probe why Korean artists are making such headway against the once dominant Japanese. Some interesting facts came out in the study, the first being, that many feel that Korean stars interact much more often with their fans–refreshing considering the distance that some Japanese stars have been known to keep with theirs. Another interesting discovery, was that fans like to see their favorite Asian pop stars involved in TV and film projects as well–a trait that Korean artists are known for, often diversifying amongst many different artistic projects quite well.
